The darker days and cold weather wear on my soul and too often I find myself in a melancholy mood. Even with the beautiful snowy evenings, the delicious food being passed around, and the anticipation for a Christmas with my family (something that I am not always fortunate to have) I have moments throughout the day when I am exhausted, anxious, or just simply sad. This unfortunately is a common feeling for many people. The continuous running around and jam-packed schedules detract from the much needed time of reflection and rest that our bodies and souls need.
The viral season that is now in full swing also proves to have no remorse for our exhausted bodies during this time and the busy hospitals and clinics are evidence of the toll that these illnesses have on us and our kids. The lack of sleep from frequent wakings throughout the night and the exhaustion that we try to cover up and push through can be overwhelming at times.
I am probably one of the least qualified people to discuss good self-care, but after much discussion with our clinic team this month, I feel that we should all put more emphasis on this topic and spread our successes and challenges with each other throughout the entire year! Our culture is driven by productivity, and we often de-emphasize the need and amazing benefit of rest-real rest. What does this look like practically? I honestly am terrible at this. I thrive off of being on the move, getting things done, and being involved anywhere I can be. However, I’ve been forced to re-think my priority for rest from being in a place of very palpable exhaustion and brokenness these past few years.
The big theme that I would love everyone to take away from this brief post today is that we need time where we can just BE. Wether that means taking time for meditation, running, playing music, writing, etc. Take time right now—yes, right now—to think about something you can do to fully rest. Self care is necessary for not only our well being, but also for our little, big fighters. I’ve said this in many other posts, but these growing minds are learning from our example and as we demonstrate this appreciation for our own health they will learn how to also rest well.
Start now and just take a minute. We can all sacrifice of minute of time and just BE.
